We’re celebrating over at Dumfries House Estate today after being awarded a Nancy Ovens award for our Harmony Outdoor Play Space. The free play space at Dumfries House was created as an extension of the STEM learning centre, and offers children opportunities to explore the four natural elements – earth, air, fire and water – through play.
The Harmony Outdoor Area was opened by HRH The Prince Charles this summer, and has since become a firm favourite with visiting schools and local children. ancy Ovens MBE was a dedicated and passionate campaigner for active play opportunities, and the Awards were set up in 2003 in her memory. The Nancy Ovens Trust presents awards to children’s play spaces that provide the best opportunities for flexible, creative, social play, and which are culturally accessible. They felt that the Harmony Outdoor Area at Dumfries House ‘offers an opportunity for many play projects to think about how their links between active learning and play can be developed’.
We are delighted to receive an award from such a play-focused charitable Trust, and hope that the recognition inspires other educational resources to consider how play can be integrated into their approach.
The Harmony Outdoor Area at Dumfries House is also in the running for a Civic Trust Award – wish us luck and stay tuned for updates. See the video below to find out more about the play space.
